Its a hard one really - who really knows if those guys are guilty or not and under what suspicions they have been arrested/detained .

Muslims don't drink so a few pints and they'll be drunk. Then sit down have a beer and say "that terrorist training camp was a laugh wasn't it" and if they reply "yeah, pity I never got to fly that plane into a US building" then you know they're guilty.

Genius. :D

Be careful how you throw around "History of Western World."

there are only around 250 prisoners currently locked up at GITMO, and I would say that most if not a very high percentage are guilty, but there was never any rush to charge them or we didn't really know how to charge them, or the evidence that we gathered on them was obtained in a way that would be thrown out in US Courts. Its very complicated situation and Obama is giving people a year to figure it out.

i said ONE OF the biggest, joe, not THE biggest. the suggestion is that there have very probably been others which have been worse. funny how you should bring up the inquisiton as an example though as i think there are parallels in many ways.

its not even one of the biggest human rights violations the US has committed.

Droping the Atomic Bomb

SLAVERY

Jim Crow Laws

In fact, similar but technically worse violations took place under Lincoln when he suspend habeas corpus  in MARYLAND and just held people prisoner without trial so that Maryland could not join the south in the civil war.

genocide of the native american tribes

Japanese internment camps during WWII

all of these CRUSH in comparison to the scale of what is happening at GITMO

Fair enough, Joe.  :D

and don't forget about the Salem Witch Trials.  Jesus, it seems like it IS our history to commit attrocities   :D         :(

this topic is a mine field really, full of opinions. Nobody is right and yet nobody is wrong. We've just got to get on with life and hope we never get caught up in any act of terrorism.

I grew up in 1980s Ireland - how to hijack, bomb, swing a baseball bat (not that we ever saw a baseball) make molotov cocktails and make your own balaclava were all on the school curriculum

Think of me as Paddy O'Bourne

A molotov cocktail? Are you sure you used them exact words? I mean, if I used that phrase, someone would have asked me how to make one and should they put ice in it. I do believe the correct term would have been "petrol bomb".  :;):

In the basque country they are known as coconuts.

We've have our share of those at perhaps a milder level than in Ireland. Basque radicals and Irish had relationship and basques copied out many Sinn Fein tactics, not only in the streets, but also in organization.

I always thought however that the basque and irish problems hadn't much to do with each other historically, despite that relationship and the brotherhood sold (you can see irish flags in my local stadium, bars) the root of the problems were different.

I won't touch your case because I don't like to discuss foreign sensitive topics like that, but in the basque case, since Spain was Spain, the Basques were part of it. In our case, most people are not in one fighting side, the majority, is ok with everybody. I speak basque and spanish well, I have within me a basque genuine way of life details, but also share Spanish customs like the siesta, cooking, language, etc. I have friends that are only basques, and I have friends that are more Spanish than King Juan Carlos.

Many of the Conquistadores were basque. Many of the sailors fighting the seas in the Spanish empire were basque.

The basque nationalism is as new as from XIX century, before that, the basques were known for our language, culture, and customs (just like Catalans, Andalucians, etc), but never wanted to be separated from Spain.

In the Irish case, I think the problems are older than XIX century, but again, I won't discuss about a sensitive topic I don't know enough about -- I'll say though, that I hate any kind of terrorism --
