criteria is different for those people. i understand what you say and probably some are innocent, but others have been caught with or had dealings with known terror cells. In other words they were actually seen to be doing wrong, and most probably been video'd or had their phone tapped and recorded.

So, tbh, they deserve everything they got.

i think you feel different if they got free and then they decided to go on the rampage, and as a result your family was killed by some numpty who, as barry puts it, strap a rucksack to there backs and blow folk up

think hard fowler. next time it could be you

I agree - to a point. I don't think guilt can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. I think they should be tried and have three possible verdicts

guilty - death penalty

Unsure - keep them locked up but in relevant comfort as some of them will be innocent and some guilty

Innocent - let them free.

what can they be tried for? they been charged with nothing even though they have been imprisoned for years now. If they had a shred of evidence of anything im sure they put someone on trial.

ring obama up and tell him that those folk at guatanamo can stay at your house free of charge

you got his number? most people who come my round house are innocent members of society who havnt been charged as criminals aswell  :D

what i said

that reminds me of a quote from an american artist called laurie anderson (remember that song from years back 'oh, superman', well that was her too).

"To be really safe you should always carry a bomb on an airplane. Because the chances of there being one bomb on a plane are pretty small. But the chances of two bombs are almost minuscule. So by carrying a bomb on a plane, the odds of your becoming a hostage or of getting blown up are astronomically reduced."

Funniest quote of the day is from Martin McGuiness (VP of Sinn Fein and a man who was an active member of the IRA), he said that "patriotism is a great evil"

He was talking about cross border shopping - surely somebody pointed out the irony of it to him.

Inquisition?

Holocaust?

Be careful how you throw around "History of Western World."

there are only around 250 prisoners currently locked up at GITMO, and I would say that most if not a very high percentage are guilty, but there was never any rush to charge them or we didn't really know how to charge them, or the evidence that we gathered on them was obtained in a way that would be thrown out in US Courts. Its very complicated situation and Obama is giving people a year to figure it out.

I grew up in 1980s Ireland - how to hijack, bomb, swing a baseball bat (not that we ever saw a baseball) make molotov cocktails and make your own balaclava were all on the school curriculum

Think of me as Paddy O'Bourne

All fundamental problems for a country that considers itself to be the world's greatest democracy and prides itself on the rule of law.  I have the utmost respect and tremendous affection for the United States and especially for it's people (hell, I married one) but the corners that have been cut to prosecute the War on Terror are an embarrassing blemish for a nation founded on such lofty ideals.  I hope that Obama can sort these matters out and get things back on track.

i said ONE OF the biggest, joe, not THE biggest. the suggestion is that there have very probably been others which have been worse. funny how you should bring up the inquisiton as an example though as i think there are parallels in many ways.

lets not forget the prisons of Iraq under saddam, or the 3000 kurds exterminated in Northern Iraq, or the 3000+ murdered in the twin towers, or perhaps the persecution and rape of women in Afghanistan under the taliban. lets not forget them

its not even one of the biggest human rights violations the US has committed.

Droping the Atomic Bomb

SLAVERY

Jim Crow Laws

In fact, similar but technically worse violations took place under Lincoln when he suspend habeas corpus  in MARYLAND and just held people prisoner without trial so that Maryland could not join the south in the civil war.

genocide of the native american tribes

Japanese internment camps during WWII

all of these CRUSH in comparison to the scale of what is happening at GITMO
