Well if everyone is after showing off their pointless knowledge, you have met your match, my friends.

There is a right and wrong way of flying the Union flag (vertically), and many people get this completely wrong.

Back in the old times, if the Union Flag was upside down, it signified that the Sovreign was in distress.

The correct way of flying the flag is to have the thick white strip on top on the pole side, thus:



(Assume that the pole is on the left-hand-side as you see it now.)
