Does anybody have any recommendations for an External HD. 500gb plus and at least 7200 rpm. Must be ultra reliable and fast.

hi Red cant recommend any from personal use but there are plenty to pick from at Ebuyer, items there are reviewed by customers so there is some feedback so be sure to check that out.

Ebuyer drives

as for Ebuyer itself, ive been using it for years and never had any problems.

Good reliable brands are

Maxtor
Western Digital
Seagate

I currently use Maxtor which I've used for over 3 years.

always been an iomega fan meself. i've tired a couple of lacie ones aswell but have had two die on me, and the death of external drives with supposedly safe backed up data is a very painful experience.

Windows reinstall coming up you see....  :lookaround  I want something to back up me stuff.

Oh dear....i think i might change my mind.

Western Digital might have something better.

the thing is though, that with most electronic hardware, if you look hard enough you will find a review from someone who has had a bad one. it seems to me that no manufacturer can keep up with 100% quality with the increasing sophistication and complexity of their devices, so inevitably once in a while someone will get a bad one. obviously some makes have a better record than others but you can never be completely sure.

Go for the Buffalo 500GB 2.5" USB powered HDD, red. No external power source required. Comes in shock proof casing and EXTREMELY reliable..... Highly recommended....

2 years ago I would have bought with care, but these days the technology is pretty reliable no matter what you buy, that should do for you Red37.
