Evenin' folks...

My niece is having trouble with Region settings on her DVD player. She's got the message "You have X number of swaps" left whenever she plays a DVD, right up to the point where now she has none left, and she can't seem to play a DVD for this region on her laptop now.
I think this is one of those cases where the DVD ROM is not multiregion so now it's "set" and either needs a) a hack, or b) a firmware upgrade/reinstall.
Thing is, she's a non-techie (and obviously nor am I , and I need to help her find a very very easy way to make her DVD ROM multiregion. Any suggestions ? And would a firmware upgrade nullify her warranty ?
The other thing is, she's over in the UK while I'm in Ireland, so I'll have to be able to email her idiot-proof instructions, as I might not be able to talk to her when she tried to do this.
Any suggestions ?

Im good at things like this

Tell her to get a medium sized hammer (not too big) and smack it hard but not a full on swing from behind the head.
Tell her to do this till the thing starts working (usually three times at most)
This is a technique passed on from generation to generation of males so maybe she should ask her boyfriend, brother or any other male she trusts?

What make and model is it mate. Usually if you type that into google and add multi region hack to it, google will find a simple hack to make it multi region. i.e. my player is a Philips and I just have to type 1240 - 0 and that makes it multi region. 1240 - 1 is USA, 1240 - 2 is Europe etc etc.

But they all have different hacks   Try here if its a Philips

I know the laptop is a DELL but not sure what make the DVD ROM is....I'll need to check that with her....
