'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin killed

The naturalist worked to protect Australian wildlife
Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident.
Mr Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from the nearby city of Cairns rushed to treat him at the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.

Police in Queensland confirmed the naturalist's death and said his family had been notified.

"It is believed that Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a stingray at Batt Reef off Port Douglas at about 11:00 am (0100 GMT)," a police statement quoted by AFP news agency said.

Mr Irwin's documentaries were shown around the world

"His crew called for medical treatment and the Queensland medical helicopter responded, however Mr Irwin had died."

Mr Irwin had built up what was a small reptile park in Queensland into what is now Australia Zoo, a major centre for Australian wildlife.

He was famous for handling dangerous creatures such as crocodiles, snakes and spiders, and his documentaries on his work with crocodiles drew a worldwide audience.

He leaves a wife, Terri, and two young children.

He seemed like a nice bloke and I always enjoyed his TV program.

Well it was inevitable really the dangerous situations he used to get himself in he was a crazy mofo.
A shame though all the same he was off his head.
RIP Steve.

Crikey poor Steve..........while his methods would raise an eyebrow with some,  his way of getting people interested in Conservation will be sorely missed

Least he went out doing what he loved, best way to go

our young un loved him and will be well upset when he knows. To be honest i thought although a bit zany ,the guy and what he did for animal conservation especially in Australia, should be rewarded.Superb man and leaves a superb family who you can see carrying his work on,like he did with Australia zoo from his dad..........STEVE  IRWIN  R.I.P.

I agree........i always thought it would be a croc that would finally finish him. Then again i suppose his experience around sea creatures couldnt have been as knowledgeble as his desert and jungle animals.

I remember watching a program he was in the sea with bull sharks probably the 2nd most dangerous shark in the world, he was feeding them he had shorts on and got bit on the arm and then his leg  :D
The sharks went into a feeding frenzy with the smell of blood and the loon just kept feeding them.
He really engrossed you the way he spoke about animals he was a nutter but a great nutter at that.
