Hey everyone, I just wanted to know what you guys thought about climate change.  Do you believe Al Gore and many others that Global warming is real and that we must pass laws that give countries carbon credits?  Also do you think that  Climagate should be investigated before we make any costly mistakes?

I think its real, but not quite sure it's as bad as what some are forecasting. A lot of people will make a lot of money out of it, so I think it has been overemphasised what we can do to help, when in reality its only if the leaders of the countries really decide to take action that things may change for the better.

I think there has been a lot of scaremongering ....... bit like the millenium bug.

I think there's every possibility the World is warming up. In a few thousand years places near the coast which haven't got cliffs behind em may disappear. Whether or not me switching off the standby light on my DVD player can have an impact on it either way I'm extremely sceptical about. The World has been warming up now for a few centuries by all accounts. I simply cannot accept that when we were barely in the midst of the industrial revolution and half of London was getting off their t!ts on opium under gaslamps, that they too were causing it.

It's a bit like having salt on your ch!ps. The prominant food and nutritional experts on the globe are saying "just one shake FFS!!" today, and we all know that give em ten years and they'll be bemoaning the fact that people have cut down on salt because it causes Aspergers desease or something else ridiculous. Give it ten years and they'll be telling us to leave our lights on all night because we've overdone it and the ice age will begin in 17 years.

lets face it the earth would be a lot better place if humans didnt inhabit it, for me the damage is already done and all your seeing now is damage limitation to try and slow it down (if thats possible at all), its going to be hard because how do you stop emerging nations like india for instance who will want to develop just as we have allowed ourselves too, yes i think its real and i dont think we can do much to stop it, but maybe we can slow it.

You see, one of the mistakes you've made is "Al Gore".

The Climate Change issue has been around LONG before Al Gore hijacked it for his own political purposes. Ignore Al Gore.

...and yes. There seems to be enough evidence that the worlds climate is changing and man may be having an impact on that. How much is another question.

BTW, "Climate-gate" is neither here, nor there. So, a few emails from a University gets hacked and all of a sudden we can ignore everthing? No. It doesn't work that way.

The bottom line is, we can either address the issues, or ignore them and hope they go away.

I generally find in life the second option is the way to go. You'll be amazed how often it works. You've then always got the option of using the first option as your plan B should it all go pearshaped. Alternatively, if you go straight to the first option you are then fecked if whatever you do doesn't work.

Ignore issues, like troublesome posters they eventually go away.

I think we are too far gone to reverse the situation now. We should spend more money on finding other planets to support life or colonization in space.

The problem is though, Plan B in this case may rule out going with Plan A.

Well if the planet genuinely is warming up Tone (and it looks like it has been for about 400 years) the best we can hope to do IMHO is to slow it down fractionally, and it is arguable we can even do that. Even by a worse case scenario there's still thousands of years before we need to all start growing flippers or moving to the Scottish highlands, so I wouldn't be overly panicking just yet.

There seems little point to me in adversely impacting upon the quality of life of everyone in the industrialised World only to discover in 100 years that it hasn't actually made any difference. Before 50 years is up some clever person will have devloped a car which runs on daylight and has no emissions anyway, as well as power stations which run on carbon dioxide or on the temperature fluctuationg from daytime to nighttime. He'll probably be Chinese but it won't matter, our kids will be able to console themselves that they aren't actually poisoning the Earth.

have a look at ice core samples, and you'll see that global warming and cooling has been happening for millions of years. Agreed that man is contributing to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, but that may bring the ice age a little sooner, however, we are in an inter-glacial period, and we are due another big freeze soon enough, as earth history suggests

Well, I'm not so sure it'll be that long. I'm looking at a lot of the Irish midlands under water last month. First time I've ever seen such extremes in my country, which is noted for its mild weather paterns.

Anyway, it's my understanding that we live in a very delicate climate balance and there's a possiblity that mans influence on the ever-changing climate may be havng an effect that will tip that balance into something we all really don't want to see.

If that means curtailing Western lifestyles a little bit, then so be it. Even if we do get to a 100 years and find it was all for nothing, then so what? We're buggered anyway. But, if we get to a 100 years and find that a few changes here and there would have made the difference (but we didn't take them)...well, that's a whole other story.
