What's the difference betwen Great Britain and the United Kingdom? I know there is one but just not sure what it is.

Is Northern Ireland, Falklands, Gibralta, some other far away places in GB, Uk, neither/both?

I saw a program before that showed the England (or maybe Britain, not sure) was really divided a few hundred years ago, different families ruling different areas etc. What united England (or Britain) was war with France.

Good to see a hatred of France is still the core of Britishness. :D

Great Britain is England,Scotland and Wales!

The United Kingdom is the three above and Northern Ireland!

The Falklands etc are part of the British empire although not included in any of the above they are still considered British soil!!

Well i think thats right i may be wrong cause i never liked Geography much!  :)

You are right Barry. The 86 counties of England, Scotland and Wales are "Great Britain". Add on the 6 counties of Northern Ireland and it becomes The United Kingdom. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not part of the UK, but are dependant territories of the English Crown.
The British Empire, from the late 15th century until 1921 had an empire made up of 14.3 million square miles. It had a population 470 - 570 million people. Though it has almost completely disappered, there are still a lot of these countries have British influence, eg their legal and goverment systems and the English lanuage.
The British Empire was changed to the British Commomwealth in 1926. Then the name was changed again to just The Commonwealth in 1949. It has 53 member states. The Queen is the head of state to 16 of the members. These are called the Commonwealth Realms. She is also the head of the commonwealth. However this does not imply any political power over the member nation. The UK does not exercise any power over the affairs of the members. Only the commonwealth Realms recognize the British Monarch as their head of state.
Here is a list of the 53 members......
Antigua and Barbuda | Australia | Bahamas | Bangladesh | Barbados | Belize | Botswana | Brunei | Cameroon | Canada | Cyprus | Dominica | Fiji | The Gambia | Ghana | Grenada | Guyana | India | Jamaica | Kenya | Kiribati | Lesotho | Malawi | Malaysia | Maldives | Malta | Mauritius | Mozambique | Namibia | Nauru | New Zealand | Nigeria | Pakistan | Papua New Guinea | Saint Kitts and Nevis | Saint Lucia | Saint Vincent and the Grenadines | Samoa | Seychelles | Sierra Leone | Singapore | Solomon Islands | South Africa | Sri Lanka | Swaziland | Tanzania | Tonga | Trinidad and Tobago | Tuvalu | Uganda | United Kingdom | Vanuatu | Zambia.

I hope this helps you Niall!
And here endth todays lesson!!! :D

Hence the reason they're cooked in a greecy liquid and leave greece marks on yer plate!!  :D  :D

Er........more of a case of conquering the world and then haven it taken away?  :D

More like conquering the world and the being told to give it back 'cos it's not politically correct to be ruling over these countries.
