9/11 - I had just finishing some spreadsheets for my old employer, when I got an E-mail telling me to turn on the news as 50,000 were feared dead. Thankfully the first figures were exaggerated, but I remember thinking at the time that it would mean war.

JFK - I was watching TV with my mum and dad when they interrupted the programs to say that he had been shot (not killed). Later they came back on to announce his death.

Diana death - Again I was watching tv with my wife when they came on tv and announced that Diana had been in an accident and that she had broken her arm or leg (can't remember which). Shortly afterwards they said that she was dead.

The others I can't really remember where I was.

9/11-  Was at school and was wondering why every 5 minutes someone was called to the office to go home.  Teachers of course not allowed to say anything.  Then once my mom finally picked me up on the drive back you could see the smoke from NJ, and finally when I got home the news basically filled in the gaps that my mom didn't tell me.  All i really remember is being worried because my dad works in Manhattan, luckily he got home a day later fine.

7/7- Can't really remember where I was, but I had a friend in London at the time and looked into it probably more then your average American.  He and his family got back safely and told some interesting stories, I really lucked out both times.

The others, no clue   :p

Elvis croaked - 1977

I was camping at Robin Hoods Bay near Scarborough (boys brigade!!!) a few of us had sneaked off into town for a bit of mischief :eyebrow ....just before we returned to camp to hear it on the wireless, all of us had been chased through a field by a f*cking great big bull....me mate 'Coops' nearly came a cropper though....he stood in what must have been one of the biggest 'orrible greeny-yellowy-brown cowpaks going...nearly up to his knee in it! (were'nt one of these with a whacking great crust on it....twas a fresh 'un) Anyway, we dragged the stinking get over the fence and got away....thank f*ck for that. That Bull was beside itself!

Yeah, then it was reported later on that he'd [Elvis] had died. Always sticks in me mind that.

Shuttle disaster - 1986

Was inside at the time in Norwich nick - we were on association and then - boof!!! there it was on the news. Felt both sick and fascinated at the same time...i loved the space shuttle and remembered thinking it must have been one hell of a way to clock off.

9/11

F*ck me....

This one has to be the most surreal. It was awesome.
Straight out of a movie.

It was me day off and I'd been in the kitchen making a fried egg butty. Popped into the sitting room and had a flick through the channels...as yer do. Turned it onto Sky News and was speechless...absolutely f*cking lost for words. I can remember feeling like it was going to be the end of the world. It must have seemed like that for real for the people of NY that morning.

The planes hitting one tower...reports of another one going into the Pentagon.....then another tower struck ....i also remember saying to her. "Imagine it collapsing...."

F*ck me....what goes and happens next?  Both of em, like a deck of cards...smoke and debris flying all over the place. Screaming....sirens going off - it really was like the last day on earth.

Rest in peace all those who perished. Never forget that day...never.

Diana death - was just about to set off to the Liverpool vs Newcastle game when I thought I'd put the telly on to check the teletext for travel news, couldn't believe it, match postponed - was well p1ssed off. Me and me mate called her every name under the sun, felt really annoyed the footie was off.

9/11 - sat in the office at work, saw it on BBC website watched it all day. what a day though, it was like the world was ending. But the following day was a stressful one. It'd been said that it was terrorist act and believe me, the first muslim/ethnic person we'd of seen we had planned to kick the fk out of him. Luckily we never saw one and we'd come to reason a bit within a day or two. It was an awful thing to think but thats how it made us feel.

7/7 - same as above, in work.

Jacko is brown bread (well, more like white bread) - we were in the pub so we did the only respectable thing - raised our glasses

Hillsborough - Sat in front of the telly waiting for the game to start. Got me pop, crisps and a bag of spogs at me side. Found it really hard to understand what the fk was going on. Saw Kenny looking concerned, saw the people carrying people on home made stretchers/advert boards. Felt sick. cried a bit too.

9/11: I was on an exchange year at LSU and living on campus in Baton Rouge. My roommate had gone to class and I was having a well-earned lie in after boozing the night before. I was woken up by the phone, it was a mexican friend of mine and the convo went more or less like this:

Me: Hello?
Ivan: It's Ivan man. We're at war man.
me: what?
Ivan: They fu.cking bombed New York man.
Me: who bombed New york?
Ivan: They sent planes in and blew up towers.
Me: What? Who did?
Ivan: We're at war man.
Me: Who bombed New York? Whose at war?
Ivan: They fu.cking bombed us man. I gotta go, speak to you later
Me: Ivan...Ivan?..........

I had no TV, no radio and everyone had buggered off. Took me ages to find someone who spoke sense. Ended up going to a frat house in the afternoon with some of the other British guys to watch the news.

Proceeded to be asked by some dozy twonk "What's it like to be in a country with terrorism?".
Cue us pointing out about growing up under the threat of the IRA.
"Yeah but that's not real terrorism is it?"

We didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Or punch his stupid fat face.

For 9/11 I was in my office working away as usual but, for some reason, I decided to turn the radio on to listen to music--which I never do when working. Not five minutes later the report of the first plane hitting came through and I was riveted to the radio.  Ended being the bearer of bad news to just about everyone in my wing of the building before moving over to a nearby pub to watch events unfold on the big screen.

9/11
I was in my car driving home when over the radio came the first report that a plane had flown into one of the towers. I shook my head and muttered to myself " what a dozy c**t " I'm thinking it was some small two seater flown by an idiot. Got home a few minutes later , poured myself a drink and put the tv on, just in time to see the second plane hit. I thought "F**k this is getting serious" and spent the next few hours along with the rest of the world glued to my tv.

Ok quick question for everyone - how many of us where more pi.ssed off that the football was cancelled when Diana (play the media ) died as opposed to being bothered about her dying ?
