I heard NBC were now showing the medals table in total medals which
puts the USA top - instead of in order of Golds, which is the normal way?

Bit sad of them if true.

The official Beijing 2008 website, like the BBC, uses golds to form the table.

Too much for NBC to stomach I suppose.

Incredible. You cannot change the rules when you don't like them. The "One gold" is more valuable than "5 silver" is debatable, but once agreed a lot of years ago, do not change it.

It's a bit pathetic when a sport fiesta like this becomes in a political battle.

In the News over here, both are reported side by side in that lets look at the total medal cout and the Chinese are dominating in gold medal race.  Last time I checked, you don't get a prize for  "winning" the olympics so I am not sure why anybody cares.   If they were going to have an official winner I think it would need to be a 5 for gold 3 for silver 1 for bronze deal.

The race from Bolt today was more impressive than the 100m race, IMO, in terms of execution and in terms of achievement. For him to come along in his first olympics and beat Michael Johnson's world record is just out of this world really. Few could've foreseen that up until recently.

Unbelievable run from Bolt........

Chemically enhanced? Doesn't look like most drugged up muscleheads though.... So happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He's a cocky lil' b@stard isn't he...... Incredible athlete though..... I thought that Michael Johnson's record would last at least as long as Pietro Mineir's (sp?) but was obviously proven wrong.

From what I've seen all the tables are broken into total, gold, silver, and bronze by country.  Most likely just using total as a way to list them because it would be easiest for the program or it does make sense.

I don't consider these rankings, just a medal table which is easy to get info off of.  But if the actual rankings were switched, then that would be pathetic.  However I still consider China in #1, with a controversial gymnastics team or not.

Its funny that now whenever someone does well they just say its drugs or genetics. Bolt is insanely good, as is Phelps. For people to say its his genes, big feet, long arms being the only reason obviously no very little about sports training. Phelps IS the greatest ever Olympian, beating the gerat Jesse Owens. No one will ever repeat what Phelps has done, and belittling what he did just because it was in water instead of on a track is very naive.

Our boys have been outstanding, just won another gold in some kind of boat event. What we need is mroe events when we are sitting down, whch is why i think we'll get gold in the womens bmx tomorrow (was postponed by bad weatehr today) Think about it, cycling, rowing, sailing - our best events, sitting down on all!

Loving these Olympics, triple jump and bmxing, maybe one more shock and we could have 20 medals this games!!!
