Christ almighty. Be realistic - how many top class strikers are going to sign for a team where they're not guaranteed to be in the first team? Not to mention the fact that by signing a top class striker you risk unsettling Baros, who is wavering enough as it is.
We basically need 4 strikers. Disregarding Mellor, we currently have 3. For me, the best option is to recall Le Tallec to LFC, but failing that it would not be the end of the world to pick up decent young prospect for £2-£3m as cover.
Stead and Earnshaw are by no means top quality, but they're workmanlike professionals that can do a job if needed. Similarly Beattie, similarly Phillips. No, I am not saying that they are long-term solutions for the club, but most strikers worth their salt that are looking to move have already moved this summer. You can laugh all you like, but if we get a couple of injuries, we may have Kewell and Pongolle up front, and then we have all the fun of trying to work out who can play on the left, etc, etc. At any rate, like I said the best case scenario as I see it given the would be to bid for Vassell.
I'm happy to stick to my guns knowing that with a cheapo signing we've got a bench that can get us through 90 mins without completely ballsing up the balance of the team. The season starts on Saturday for f**k's sake. If you've got any better ideas that we could realistically sign before the window closes, by all means tell the class.
