Something to do with being pinned in by the Greek Navy, mate (though that little tidbit's not in the film).

additional titbits .
The 1200 persian vessels  where in fact engaged in a naval battle with the greeks (200-250 vessels) at Artemisium, the Greeks eventually withdrew ,the persians then sailed on unimpeded to Salamis (nr Athens)  a few weeks later where they were destroyed by the greeks.

Yeah, I read that one a few days after seeing the movie.  I was surprised how close the film was to historical accounts.  And I was well impressed that some of the lines that I thought were straight out of Hollywood were part of Herodotus's account of the battle.  For example: Persian: "our arrows will blot out the sun"; Stelios ( :D ): "then we will fight in the shade."

Class!

I remember watching the 300 Spartans march through Upton on their way to Woodchurch Spa and Baths for their pre battle orgy.I was only a kid at the time but I picked up a fallen twig from a tree and pleaded to let me do battle with them; they said no but my time would come.Still waiting for the pre battle orgy that they promised.......This monogamy lark is not the stuff for warriors.

You'll be pleased to know that "300 Spartans" is due for a worldwide release in 1962 in glorious Technicolor. :D
