However Villa should get it for his goals and work rate ..

That made me chuckle. As brilliant a player as Messi is, he didn't do anyway near enough in this tournament to justify the tag.

a definate contender. Him and Alonso , if we had players like those two we could sell them to finance the purchase of Gareth Barry.

I agree that he is brilliant, as brilliant as Alonso - a player we had and who was the key player in the team (he holds midfield and sprays the ball around, really controls the game). At least 1 person thought we should sell Alonso for 10m to part finance the purchase of ............ Gareth Barry

One person Niall, IIRC I can remember plenty of forum posters on here at the time quite happy to be rid of Alonso to get Barry

That was after Alonso had one poor  season, its amazing how people can turn on you after one poor season isnt it   :D

Not that it means anything, hindsight wonderful isnt it but its all irrevelent now

Yeah the germans were the most impressive. Im going against the Octopus though and saying Holland will win it. (although the Octopus does have a cool name !)

Germany looks different depending on whether Mueller plays or not. Today you could see that they were back to being dangerous even though missing Klose, Podolski and Lahm. Goes to show that Mueller can bring other players into play and be dangerous himself as well. How I wish we can have Mueller playing for us. Not gonna happen though... He's a gem they managed to uncover from their youth academy.

Another player to note is Schweinsteiger... He filled in the role of Ballack perfectly... I would say that he even performs better than Ballack would have now. He has matured tremendously as a player and has become a better player playing CM than a winger. He is an ideal replacement for Gerrard for us IMO...

The di ck that is backing the vuvuzela has come out and said that something needs to be done about player fatigue, reckoning a lot of top stars didn't perform because of it.

But it's a level playing field surely? The top players have it equally tough at the biggest clubs, the lesser players may have it easier but aren't as good. That's life, they need to get on with it and bite the bullet. They either pick fresh players who aren't as good, or the best players and accept they may not be so fresh.

But at the end of the day it is up to the manager, he doesn't have to play the top players in the games against the weaker sides. Personally I think the top players were just negated by the level of defending as the competition went on - except Germany who lost twice when teams showed defensive abilities, but pulled apart defences that showed weaknesses like Australia, England, Argentina and latterly Uruguay

Glad Germany got 3rd place, wouldn't have wanted the cheats to have got it. Their cheating got them 4th, that is more than they deserved.

By the by, Germany have now won twice, finished Runners-up FOUR times and been 3rd place three times in the last 12 World Cups. Add to that three losing QFs and that is an impressive run, including Runners-Up and two 3rd places in the last three World Cups.

By comparison England have reached two QFs, two L16s and failed to reach the 1994 World Cup in the last five competitions, yet are talked up as potential winners EVERY TIME  ???

Oh no not I, that I deny, if you'd put Barny in our side I think I would have cwied....................  :D

Barry is a nothing player, a good journeyman club footballer but not top class and that was clear in the World Cup and too many other internationals. He is a poor man's Gerrard or fat frank, what made me laugh is people built up his profile by saying he can play LB which I think he has done only in emergency in like the last 5-10 years. Plenty of players have a left foot, doesn't mean we should buy them because they could in theory cover LB. Paying £17.5m for a right-back who can't defend was laughable enough, paying £18m for a midfielder and playing him LB would have been even more so.

Agreed. I think he's been top quality throughout the world cup - clever, good balance, strong with a fantastic passing range. He's somewhere between Alonso and Gerrard for me. We haven't a hope of signing him unfortunately.
