you must be scraping the barrel to have to go back to '67 to say you ran rings around us to win 3-2!! That's hardly a pasting!!

Anyway, you should really get a Scotland team back together again as it's been a shame you scrapped the national game up there!!

It seems clear than a lot of the English can have a laugh at others but very few can laugh at themselves. A case of taking things far too seriously. Lighten up lads!!! :D

Scottish football used to be class - Souness, Hanson, Nichol,Dalglish,Strachen etc.

Do the scots on this site have any idea what happened over the last 15 years or so as it hasn't produced a single top player? just curious.

I'm not Scottish, but having lived there for 6 years I have a few thoughts on the matter.

Undoubtedly the influx of sub-standard foreigners during the early '90s has had a big impact.  A lot of the emphasis was put on bringing over cheaper imports from scandinavia in particular, in an effort to close the gap on the old firm.  Not enough emphasis was put on developing home grown talent for much of the '90s and it is only in the last 2-3 years that clubs like Motherwell, Hearts and Hibernian in particular have started producing some talented young players:

Hibs - O'Connor, Riordan
Well - McFadden
Hearts - Gordon, Webster

These players aren't top class, but some have real potential - Arsenal wanted Gordon (Scottish international keeper now) last season, O'Connor got a big money move to a Russian team and Riordan will be playing for Celtic next season.

Another school of thought is that the old firm should shoulder some of the blame.  Taking advantage of the huge wealth gap between themselves and other Scottish clubs, they have a history of snapping up any decent young talent that is coming through, then sitting them on the bench and stunting their development.  Rangers are the worst for this - Miller, Thompson and Rae are recent examples of young players they've taken and sat on the bench.  These guys are now all around 24/25 and probably won't make the top grade.  Miller had to go to Wolves and ironically has now signed for Celtic, Thompson is now at Cardiff I think.

Also, the old firm have not been bringing through the youth they should have been in recent years, concentrating again on bringing in European players to try to compete in Europe.  When Barnes took over at Celtic for example, he released almost the entire youth team, one of the lads I knew and is now plying his trade for a semi-pro team in Ireland, when as a youngster he was in the Irish U18 team that got to the final of the Euro Championships.  Never got to fulfill his potential.

Again, it is only in the last couple of years that the old firm have started producing decent kids again.  Celtic have McGeady, Marshall, Beattie and Maloney.  Rangers have Burke, Smith and they've taken a good young player Boyd from Kilmarnock.

Watch for Riordan, Gordon and Burke, who I think have the potential to develop into real quality players for the Scots.

Have to disagree with some of that Big Niall, imo Scottish football  has never been what you could properly describe as "Class" , it's a bit like describing a cabbage as "exotic"   :D

On your  point regarding certain scottish players however , I wholeheartedly agree , Liverpools great historyof success is down to the contribution from some outstanding players from Scotland (and Ireland and Wales) .

Bring back the home nations tournament!

Some countries need to be brought back to reality, I find it amazing how fans from other home nations can even comment on the international scene, one which they're non-existent in.

No bad feeling :D
