I think the manager should be English which narrows it down to curbishley, alderdyce and mcclaren.

I'd say Curbishley has done best over a period of time (although no record against European teams is a minus)

I don't think England want a Bolton style team (Graham Taylor style), McClaren has been OK but nothing more at Boro.

curbishley of all the england candidates for me. to establish charlton for as long as he has in the premiership is remarkable considering the lack of money he's had to spend. mclaren has been a relative success at boro in that he's brought them their first ever major trophy but he's got arguably the best chairman in the country behind him. what may work in mclaren's favour though is that he's got one foot inside the england setup already and he's worked with the very best at manure down the years. if he wins the UEFA cup this season i think he's nailed on.

as for sam the butcher, if he gets the job i'm emigrating and supporting scotland. :D

big sam or mclaren would be disasterous appointments in my opinion, their style of football is awful.
bolton and boro are probably the two dullest teams in the prem, all p.o.m.o (position of maximum opportunity) and percentage balls.
i`d go for hiddink myself, but i`ve got a funny feeling that curbishley might have a stooge on the inside of the f.a in the shape of fellow ex-hammer trevor brooking. at least charlton play decent footy though.
o`neill is an excellent coach and his man management skills seem second to none but he also leans towards the direct style in my opinion.

Guus is now officially out of reach. Russian have him in the hip pocket, and rumour has it that the Cheatski's owner had to dig deep to seal the deal. I hope it cost him an absolute bomb!!!

The Irish went with Staunton and Bobby Robson as mentor . I'd be happy to see Pearce and Venables in a similar set up .

I couldn’t be less concerned if Mike Bassett  took the the post of England manager as long as the Liverpool boys come back unscathed for the new season .

I think it makes sense to first look at the English candidates for the England job. The only serious contenders are Sam Allardyce, Alan Curbishley and Steve Mclaren. To be honest, none of them are outstanding choices and each would come with a high element of risk. But I think it would be well worth giving one of these three a 2 year contract. I would personally go for Alan Curbishley. He has been managing in the Premiership for a long time and has success considering Charlton’s circumstances, its a shame he hasn’t had the opportunity to test him self at a club with more ambition.
