The spokesman, William Gaillard, said international football was "in the end what people like the most."

Who the fook is he trying to kid?? International footie is shite apart from the world cup and euro tournaments. They are only exciting because there is frigg all else happening when they're on. One way around this could be for players to sign an agreement in their contracts saying that they will forfeit their pay if they get injured on international duty.

  Like thats ever gonna happen!

It wouldnt really bother me if international football was finished, but I do wonder if the effect this would have, would spill over into club football. The smaller countries players would have less opportunities to display their talents and thereby a move to a big club.

A large number of FA's would in many cases go bankrupt without the international games, and this would lead to many more countries club sides becoming semi- professional at best.

A better solution might be reducing the number of games the better footballing nations have to play to qualify and reducing the number of friendly matches to a minimum (none as far as I am concerned). This would have the added advantage of giving the smaller, poorer countries more matches to play to qualify for tournaments, while also raising the standard of teams at the WC or Euro tournament.

Moyes on Cahill

Grumble Bum

The fact is that Cahill has 'personal' sponsorship contract obligations to fill on the Wednesday. Hence the delay in his departure until 24hrs after the Australia match finished.

You can't have it both ways and unless Moyes takes a chill pill he'll loose the likes of Cahill because Cahill is fiercely patriotic.

It's funny that you don't hear all the grumbles where the African Nations Cup is on and all the African players go home to play for their country.

International football is part and parcel of the modern game.

Build a bridge and get over it.

The entire arguement is akin to picking up your ball and going home because you can't win. Blah, blah, blah. :(

Okay Lionheart, lets just say your the proud owner of small shop in Tasmania. But your only just keeping aflot a business that has been quite over the last few months. Your assistant manager is a great help to you and has a strong pull in the local community and is worth his weight in gold.
But because he belongs to the army reserves he gets called up to go and do observation posts in remote areas like Bamaga. He's away for three weeks, but you a your stuggling little enterprise have to carry on paying his wages over this period. To make matters even worse he broke his hand while away on duty and cannot work for the next seven weeks, as the manager of the business would you be happy to pay his wages for seven weeks or do you think that come from the army reserves?

As far as top players in Europe are concerned they earn enough as it is . Surely it's not unreasonable for a club like us (for example) to tell their players "Sure you can go and play for your country but if you get injured we're not going to pay your wages until you're fit again . It's your choice ,end of."

Then the likes of Kuyt ,Owen , Cole etc can sort it out for themselves with the respective national association . Don't national FA's have insurance policies like clubs do to cover cost of injuries to players ? ,if not then maybe it's time they did.

I think thats the point woof most countries cant afford the insurance, and the ones that can dont- they only insure against career ending injuries.

Another problem is how can they prove whether they were injured on international duty or carrying an injury from their club football. ie Kewell, was he injured playing for Austrailia or was he carrying injuries from earlier which were just made worse.

Even the EPL clubs dont have insurance against injuries - just against career finishing injuries.

Well something has to be done, that is for sure.

If the individual National Associations cannot afford to pay for any injuries sustained whilst representing them, then FIFA can.

It's about time that faceless cash-cow was milked for everything it's got.

FIFA earn billions of pounds off the back of World Cups and Continental championships. Even friendlies have to have FIFA sanctioning, which means more money for nothing.

The fact is:

If FIFA wants international football, they can f*cking well pay for it's consequences.

If they don't, I'd suggest Liverpool lead the way in preventing their players from representing their country.

Just for any doubters - if you worked for a large company, bought a car, maintained it, filled it with petrol every week, and needed it as part of your work, how would you feel if some nobhead from another company's sales department nicked off with it periodically to impress a client, thrashed it, used all the petrol, then left you with the repair bill?

You'd do your nut.

So how can you expect clubs not to get p*ssed off aswell?

On the other hand let me pose this question:

If one of the perks of this job was that you got the use of a nice new shiny car that was replaced as and when needed, even though it went missing from time to time and sometimes was returned in a less than ideal state but certainly fixable to be that lovely shining motor that you love so much, would you refuse to take the job.

Me thinks not.

Look, that's the way of the world. You can shout at sky all you want, it isn't going to change the fact that international (country v country) football is easily marketable. In fact I would prefer to see the USA v Iraq, England v Argnetina, Israel v Palistine than to see men and women go to war and kill each other. If we could restrict world conflict to the playing field I would be right chuffed.
