Liverpool look set to beat Arsenal to the loan signing of Nuri Sahin after offering Real Madrid a superior financial package to secure the midfielder’s signature. Sahin had been expected to join Arsenal but Liverpool’s willingness to pay a greater proportion of his £120,000-per-week salary has turned the situation in their favour.
Real have accepted Liverpool’s offer to pay 70 per cent of Sahin’s wages to take him on loan for the rest of the season. Arsenal had been prepared to pay only 60 per cent, but were unwilling to accept an option price of £14 million at the end of the season, and despite the added lure of Champions League football now look likely to miss out on one of Arsène Wenger’s summer transfer targets. The Frenchman is considering his options.

It's the first headline on the official site.  To me, that says something.  The Official site never has headlines about players like that until we've signed them, or are signing them (like we did when it had the "Joe Allen at Anfield" bit).

Would be thrilled for him to come in on loan.  Also, does that mean RM offered him for £14 million, and Arsenal thought that was too high? Or is that what Arsenal wanted to pay for him?  Because if there was a buy-out clause on there, that would be absolutely fantastic.  Puts all the power in our hands.

I doubt very much he is earning £120,000-per-week. Halve that and you’re probably closer.

I guess we've offered to pay him 80k a week. That's a lot and maybe not the best idea.

i hope thats true!!!
i really think this lad could propel us to the top 4......or even higher  :buttrock
on paper a side with the likes of suarez, gerrard, sahin, agger, lucas, reina, skrtel and johnson in it should be challenging for the title imo.

we probably only lack 2 things to be title contenders, a genuine goalscorer and some bottle, our players throw the towel in too easily.
but looking at those names on paper we should be up there with the top sides.
i hate to say it but if you gave alex ferguson those players (suarez, gerrard, sahin, lucas, agger, skrtel, reina, johnson, allen, carroll etc) i bet he`d go close to winning it.

We also lack creativity and a bit of direct play... We need a wide player and a forward. I still dont know where Sahin fits but my guess is that Lucas will be the one to give way.

I don't know about that, mate, although I admire your optimism. Any player who can attract the interest of Wenger on two separate occasions, form a key part of a title winning Bundesliga side and do enough to earn a move to Mourinho's Madrid probably knows a thing or two about football. I can think of a few former Madrid players who struggled to settled before getting their break and being a success elsewhere. Van Der Vaart is a good example of that, Sneijder too. The signs are good. Given the reported wage, I like the fact that it's a loan deal, and I also think it's a good idea to include a buy-out clause giving us the first option in the event that he's a hit.

As for the prospect of a title challenge, I very much doubt he'll be able to propel us that far because no club in PL history has ever made up so much ground in one season, and given how things are currently shaping up I see no reason to think that will change any time soon. I do believe, though, that's it's both reasonable and realistic, with a couple more signings of the right calibre (a wide man and striker) to expect a challenge for fourth place. There's no way we should be setting our sights as low as six or seventh with the players we have. We should be realistic, but we should also be ambitious. The longer we go without CL football, the harder it will to keep the players we need to make up ground on the other teams.

Not with the wide options we have and Suarez wasting every chance he gets
