I think Kenny's downfall was not necessarily persisting with Henderson on the right but trying as with his first spell in charge in playing what he considered was the strongest eleven in the squad at any one particular time to fit each game rather than picking players in their best positions. This was why Henderson played most games on the right which didn't work, Downing sometimes was on the left or the right, sometimes Bellamy was on the left or the right and towards the end of the season there was rotation with Spearing and Shelvey.

Kenny did this in his first spell in charge I remember an away game at Villa Park in January 91 when he started with Steve Staunton on the right hand side of midfield and it didn't work the game ended 0-0. He switched it before the end with Jimmy Carter going from the left to the right but it still didn't win the game.

On the comments thing I suspect that the owners may have picked up on this in terms of the bad press Kenny got after the Suarez verdict and his reaction to the Sky reporter after the game at Old Trafford. I'm not saying that that Kenny's post match interviews cost him his job but I don't think it helped his cause.

It also didn't help that Kenny took a team that finished strongly and went from 13th to 6th in less than five months and added a load of expensive British tat to it and as a result dramatically weakened our first team. You don't send someone as technically gifted as Aquilani out on loan and you don't sell Meireles and replace those players with a Glasgow Rangers reject and a young midfielder who was a big fish in a small pond.

Kenny's poor summer signings cost him his job. He changed too much, too quickly and as a result we regressed in terms of performances and results from his caretaker stint.

I don't know if that was what happened over the whole season. The Sunderland game last August was the microcosm of the season in terms of missed chances in the first half, the ref disallowing Carroll's goal and then a poor second half in which the opposition got back into it and were better than us.

Nevertheless until at least mid-December the form was at least top six and I think the performance level dropped after that which made grinding out wins, that were ground out up to then, more difficult. I suspect it was the tactical change with Downing as the main winger in 4-4-2 as opposed to the formation at the end of 10-11 with Kuyt and Meireles linking so well with Suarez that caused the problem rather than the signings themselves. I don't know if Kenny was convinced by playing Meireles in every game because often he went missing and he does tend to do better in a 4-3-3 system rather than 4-4-2.

Ultimately though I think the other factor was the lack of planning in terms of playing Suarez and Carroll in the same team. Suarez was bought to play with Torres the season would have been different had they played together. The groundwork has been laid for the two of them to flourish in the future but it was too much to expect them to hit it off that well in the first season particularly given Downing's patchy form and Henderson being so limited in terms of creativity at the moment.

It is better to be consistent on all of these kinds of issues.

At the moment it's early days in the Rodgers reign. Let's wait and see what he does in the next few weeks so that when pre-season comes around and the lads are off to the states for those games hopefully we'll have a better idea of how things are going to pan out.

I think we are going to have to be patient with Brendan in terms of top four next season but I'm hopeful that we will see improvement.

I totally agree. I've got zero expectations for next season, but hope to see progress in our play and set up. Then, the season after, i hope we can climb the table.

I was like plenty others who were worried about the appointment of an unproven and untested manager and I still am and worried that the appointment will go all wrong and we could fall further back. That's the stark reality.

People like Kewell spent months demanding Kenny left now expects people to think he will give a new manager time ? He and others showed no paitence with the previous manager - if you think I have written him off then you're wrong but that's your choice but you will see throughout the season as you watch people's paitence run out with Kewell one of the first to go - he has previous.

Benny, do you REALLY want us to look up your previous comments, where you agree with a poster who said "we are phucked and doomed to years of obscurity"...eh? You agreed and now you're crying 'cos no one takes you seriously when you preach about giving managers a 'chance'.

I lost my patience with Kenny around February...12 months into tenure when it was very clear it wasn't working. his signings were a disaster, his tactics out of touch and his media handling plain awful.

It was painful to watch a legend go through all that and, for me, i wanted him to resign and go upstairs. I certainly didn't write the guy off after 10 mins of getting the job

The criticism of Brendan Rodgers because Swansea finished below us in the table is a red herring and lacks credibility. The fact is that nobody thought Swansea would survive at the start of last season. The fact his team finished in mid-table with largely championship players is a tribute to his man management skills particularly as they took 4 points off Liverpool. The criticism would be more valid of Martinez given that Wigan have been strugglers in every season he's been there and that it would be a bigger step to go from relegation candidates to trying to get Liverpool into the top four.

My point earlier about the other candidates for the position was what would others have wanted the owners to do had all of the relevant candidates rejected the offer. Nobody has yet come up with an answer on that.

The point is that the process was followed it didn't take as long as when Rafa succeeded Houllier or when Hodgson succeeded Rafa and at the end of the day the best candidate was identified and appointed. Rather than questioning the appointment we should be now looking to the future, supporting the new manager and his new backroom team and soon enough supporting the team we follow in their quest to achieve better things.

If however in three months, six months or eleven months the team is no better than before I'm happy to have another discussion about it then but quite honestly let's give Brendan the time to sort things out and then judge him.
